Digital Numbers
I came across the digital numbers pattern for the first time in my favorite sashiko book 「刺し子デザイン帖 SASHIKO Modern Style 31」 "sashiko dezain chō SASHIKO Modern Style 31" by Ayufish.
Stitches on the Run is reader-supported. When you buy through links on my site, I may earn an affiliate commission. It doesn't cost you anything extra but it helps keep my blog and my stitches running. Thanks!
The meaning of the sashiko pattern digital numbers
There is no inherent meaning to the pattern itself, but you may choose any number that has meaning to you. The example above features a part of π, the numerical value of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
I'm quite enchanted by these kind of modern patterns, if you happen to be, too, stitch away!!
Stitching advice for the digital numbers sashiko
You could even expand the motives to include a digital alphabet. Just be aware of the fact that while this pattern is showing up in modern sashiko design books, you shouldn't be surprised if people don't recognize it as sashiko.
If anyone asks, the digital numbers pattern belongs to the group of hitomezashi 一目刺し.
The great thing about hitomezashi is that you only need guidelines to stitch any of the patterns. You can easily draw the marks yourself by using a ruler and a pen that erases with heat or a chalk pencil. Or, if you are lazy like me, you could get the pre-printed cloth below.
Pre-printed fabric by Daruma
If you want to do sashiko, but you don't want the hassle of drawing the pattern yourself, Daruma offers fabric that has guiding lines printed on it. The lines wash out when you've finished stitching. Super easy!
How to stitch the digital numbers sashiko
Gor for all vertical lines first, then fill in the horizontal lines. Watch the magic slowly appear before your eyes! Hooray!! It's super easy if you have dots or crosses every 5mm or so.
Leave a comment if you are interested in detailed instructions and I will upload more information as soon as possible.
Book announcement
Great news!!! The book mentioned above has been translated into English at last: Amazing Sashiko: Modern Japanese Embroidery Designs by Ayufish int.
I think it looks better in the Japanese version, but the content seems to be the same. I only have the Japanese version, so I can't say for sure, though.
Amazing Sashiko
This is my favorite sashiko pattern book ever!!!
The author worked as a space engineer, so I guess that's why her approach is a little different from other sashiko artists.
